When you spend a great deal of time in a gym setting, you pick up a thing or two to remember. The following are a few nuggets of advice for anyone who is looking to step into the gym. Take these ideas and make them your own for a great workout.
Tip 1: Be conscious of time. This is not necessarily for rest periods but for overall time in the gym. Stepping into a gym is sometimes like stepping into an alternate universe. I can get wrapped up in my routine and be there for a very long time. If you have other places to be, check your watch.
Tip 2: Be present. This is simply meaning that you should have your “head in the game” as they say. If you are thinking about a million other things you will not get the most out of your session.
Tip 3: Switch it up. This keeps it interesting for you and keeps your body guessing. I like to change things up every two weeks or so because I find myself getting bored easily. You can only jump on the elliptical for so long before you begin to dread it. Try a fun class or if you are training for an event, consider some cross training.
Tip 4: Write it down! There is a lot of hype about keeping a fitness journal, but it is for a good reason: it works! Keep track of sets, reps, resistance, etc. and also how you feel. When you go to switching up your routine, review the previous weeks and make adjustments accordingly. This also helps you to know what works and what isn’t worth your time.
Tip 5: Make a date! Schedule it and stick to it! You wouldn’t blow off a hot date to crash on the couch, would you? So why would you cancel on something that is going to make you hot? Stick to it and look forward to it. It is not always easy but it is always worth it!
Tip 6: Grab a date! What could be more fun that sweating it out with your significant other? Many people find exercise to be a turn on. Try an active date such as a fun class! It is more enjoyable when you can share an activity that you love with the person that you love.
Tip 7: Get a grip! Many people don’t realize that changing your grip will hit the muscle differently. Try it sometime! Change your grip either wider or closer on lat pull down, rows, etc. and watch your body change!
Take it from a gym junkie, a few tips can go a long way.
